Grand Central Station ~ 6:20pm

If you're around ICP today at 6:30pm stop on by for a discussion on Photoblogs by myself, Eliot Shepard of Slower.net and Jen Bekman of the Jen Bekman Gallery. It should be fun. The event is sponsored by the ASPP.

  1. Sometimes I think you've painted yourself into a corner with a too narrowly defined scope, and then you prove me wrong with a shot like this! Or maybe it's shots like this that suggest you should refrain from publishing so much underground work, in as much as so little compares to this?

Nonetheless, I'm very happy to see a shot like this. We will be your guinea pigs!

  2. I have to think for awhile about your comment Frank. I'm not quite sure that we should only publish the best of the best. Is that what a daily photoblog is about? For me it's about getting out there everyday and finding something interesting each and every day. It's the daily process. Blogs like Travis' are about more than just the photography and it's technical aspects, it's about capturing our daily lives, however perfect or imperfect that effort might be.

We need to move outside of our comfort zone and view images from a different perspective. If you're a photographer, try to look at the photo from an anthropologist's point of view - what does it say about the society or community it portrays? If you're a social worker, what do you think of it's technical quality? If you're a steelworker, can you appreciate the art involved?

  3. None of the above

  4. Dear Maxwell

Your comment really added to the dialogue and I want to thank you for your insightful words.

  5. I've been watching your site for several years now, and this photo certainly makes my top five of all that I've seen of yours. The composition is much stronger and more interesting; instead of a couple unique characters that look "cool," you have a sort of dialogue between the people here. I love the juxtaposition.

PS. I sent you one of my bus photos quite a while ago after you asked to see some of my project which was inspired by your photos. You never responded to the photo, did you get it? Anyway, my project is pretty much completed now, it ended after a very complicated robbery. If you want to see any other shots from that project (they got much better) or hear about it in any way, email me.
