F Train ~ Carrol St. ~ 9:15am

Carrol Street is the last underground stop for a few stations. I've always found this a station strangely photographic. The ceilings are beautifully arched. You might be seeing an extra from today tomorrow. I'm a sucker for the place. On another note. Can anyone remember when they installed these lights at the end of the tunnel? And why?

Check out www.straphangers.org/statesub05 Wednesday after 10am EST. Straphangers is releasing their annual "State of the Subway" report and they are using my images to art the document. Straphangers is a fine organization that fights for the rights of subway and mass transit riders. I'm honored that chose my images to represent their report.

  1. Nice capture of the lighting and reflections (at least, I think some of those are reflections). Great!

  2. Congratulations on the Straphangers report. Another good use for your photographs. They will continue to find a life after their original purpose here on this photoblog.

You've been at this since last December, in your attempt to stay at it for 365. It becomes a great challenge somewhere along the way, to continue to find interesting images because at some point it's natural to slide into the "I've done it all before" mode. You're forced to continually ask your brain and eye to scan the underground landscape for something new and different.

Amazingly you continue to find those little bits of interest, and this is one of those images. The position of the car, the odd lights, the end of the tunnel reflected just above the arms of the operator.

My question is this -- do you get off the train at different stops in order to take photos, or are all of these your regular stops? Just wondering.

  3. brilliant. and congrats on the straps article.

  4. You must have been reading my mind. It sure feels like the dog days of summer, photographically. I've been very unmotivated. Which led me to this image. In an effort to keep looking beyond my usual sites I'm trying to do a little more exploring. So this day on my way in, I got off the train and crossed over the tracks to see what my fellow morning commuters looked like all packed on the platform.

In regards to getting bored. Yes there is certainly that aspect. Some days images just happen in front of me. Other days I have to go exploring. That's what's so good about sticking with this for a year; I hope that I'll be so past making all the obvious images that I'll get to some new surprising moments in the subway. Maybe.

  5. don't give up on it...and are you going to keep this going after a year or not?!?!?! =-O Please say it's not so that you're shutting it down. :(

  6. Have to agree keep going! Like this shot, mostly 'cause I know how hard it is to get images in light like that.

  7. This is one of my favorites of your images -- the multiple depths is terrific.
