Waiting for a Brooklyn bound C Train ~ Nassau st ~ 6:30pm

An extra image from this weeks commute. One of the reasons I don't look at the lcd until I get home is I don't want to be heartbroken. This was a portait I would have been very sad to have spoiled. Sometimes I feel like we are such a subterranean species.

  1. This image is gorgeous. I think it's awesome that you don't look at your images until you get home. I think it's nice to have that mystery.

  2. Did you give this guy one of your business cards with your URL on it? I hope so, because this is an excellent portrait!

  3. A somewhat somber but beautiful portrait... The lighting played well in your favour.

  4. Great shot, certainly with that bright light above it would have been easy to spoil the exposure on the face. Did you have the light meter on centered? Well l it looks great and I would have spioled a pic in this situation, so respect!

  5. Truely awesome portrait!

  6. This is what it's all about. What camera do you use?

  7. Very nice shot.

  8. marvelous shot, great lighting !

  9. Nice!

  10. I wonder how you always get such amazing closeups of people... This one finally moves you from "watchlist" to "favorites"...

PS: Never mind that the yankees didn't do soooo well last season :-)
    PPS: Go sox...

  11. Wonderful! I kept having to look to see if those really were the whiltes of his eyes I can see hiding away in the darkness.

I know lots of people ask you this, but seriously, how do you do it? It'd be great if you could post a reply on your site - like a 'how to take wonderful portraits of complete strangers' guide.

For this one, it looks like you could reach out and touch him - do you just take the photo, then put your camera away, and pretend that you haven't just taken a photo of him? That must be so hard, especially since he is looking right at you.

You certainly have a lot of bottle... Excellent site - the only thing that'd improve it would be if the comments popup worked a bit faster - for some reason it can take a long time for the content to appear after the popup has opened.

  12. Jim-I bet every photographer that photographs strangers has a different approach. For this project I've come to employ numerous techniques. Quite ofter I frame it up in my mind then I'll take one frame and if I'm lucky I'll get off another before my cover is blown. Sometimes I'll shoot with the camera sitting on my lap. I don't like to that too much because I feel a little weird about sneaking a photo. For this image I actually asked him if I could make his portrait. He didn't speak much English so I wasn't sure what his reply was but he didn't protest when I stepped back and took three frames. This is the first image I posted that I asked the subject. Best, Travis

  13. GO SOX!!!! Yankees SU*K! Good shot thought ;) -T
